Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in August 2019 were 10.3 million metric tons (Mt), a slight increase from shipments in August 2018, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through August totaled 66.9 Mt, an increase of 2.4% from those for the same period in 2018. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in August 2019 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan, these states accounted for 41% of cement produced.
The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois) received 38% of August shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled 217,000 metric tons in August 2019, a decrease of 7.7% from those in August 2018. Shipments for the year through August totaled 1.6 Mt, a slight decrease from those for the same period in 2018. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in August 2019 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Georgia; these states received 55% of August shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled 7.3 Mt in August 2019, an increase of 3.6% from the output in August. Production for the year through August totaled 50.8 Mt, a slight increase from the output for the same period in 2018. The leading clinker-producing states in August 2019 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Pennsylvania; these states accounted for 48% of clinker produced.
